It’s difficult to see this side by side. It’s crazy to think that this is the same person, yet SO SO not the same person.
I used to live “free”, complete treat yo’self mentality, YOLO. I was anything but free. I was trapped in my own hamster wheel, perfectly capable of stepping off, but it was just easier to stay on.
Fast forward a few years and I had “treated myself” right into high blood pressure, high cholesterol, harmful habits and I NEEDED a change. I decided to shift my mindset into still treating myself, but in a different way. I started treating my body and my health as if I actually valued it. I started speaking kindly to myself a little more often, acknowledging negative thinking and habits and letting that shit go (not burying it for later).
I started exercising consistently, not just when I “felt like it”. I started fueling my body with healthy whole foods and a lot more water. I gave myself grace, but also held myself accountable to a higher standard.
It definitely didn’t happen overnight. It took a lot of trying, failing, trying again and again and again. It wasn’t (and still isn’t) perfect. But it is consistent. It is positive. It is what my daughter will grow up to (hopefully) model in her own life one day. We are given one body, one life. It’s easy when we’re younger to think our choices don’t have long term effects, that we’ll improve “someday”. That’s how it starts. Then before you know it, a lot of somedays have gone by and you don’t recognize the person staring back at you in the mirror and wonder “How did I get here??”
For the first time in my adult life this year, my cholesterol levels are normal. My blood pressure is a healthy number. I have energy to keep up with my daughter. I have a full cup to pour from. I FEEL amazing.
I don’t have to workout, I GET to. I don’t have to eat healthy, I GET to. Treating yourself well (i.e. being active + eating clean, resting + recharging) is not a punishment, it is the epitome of self care, self love.
If you’re reading this right now, it’s not too late to start treating yourself well. And the best part? YOU have all the power to make that decision and make those changes. It doesn’t have to be an overnight transformation, it’s actually better and more sustainable if it isn’t. One decision, one baby step at a time..#takeover2021
